Fukushima Shares Lead at Salonpas Cup

Defending champion Akiko Fukushima capitalized on an eagle on the par-4 18th to fire a 4-under 68, sharing the first-round lead with Lee Ji Hee and Shin Hyun Ju at the World Ladies Championship Salonpas Cup on Thursday.

Fukushima, who won her third major by beating Shin Ji Yai of South Korea on the fifth playoff hole at last year’s Salonpas Cup, sank one eagle, three birdies and a bogey in the sog at the par-72, 6,553-yard Ibaraki Golf Club in Tsukubamirai, Ibaraki Prefecture.

American Paula Creamer, who finished second on the U.S. LPGA money rankings last year with four victories, had three birdies against two bogeys for a 71 and shared a nine-way tie for 15th place.

A Quick Round With… Paula Creamer

GolfChannel.com has decided to run a series of articles where they do a Q&A with some of golf’s best and brightest stars. The first installment is an email interview with Paula Creamer conducted by GolfChannel.com senior writer Randall Mell.

In the interview, Paula gives her thoughts on golf, music, movies and the after life. Here is a small preview:

MELL: The single word that best describes you?
CREAMER: Driven

MELL: What motivates you most in life?
CREAMER: To know that I’m being given the opportunity to be the best that I can be – both on and off the golf course – and that I can make a difference, especially in young people’s lives.

MELL: Name three items that aren’t about golf on your bucket list (things you want to do before you die).
CREAMER: Sky diving! (But no one wants to do it with me!). Being on Dancing with the Stars sometime . . . But I know that’s down the road, since I really don’t have the time to do fun things like that due to my playing schedule. Still, it would be a blast . . . Also, I want to eat all the ice cream I can without gaining a single pound!

Head over to GolfChannel.com for the entire interview.

Creamer Still Battling Mystery Stomach Ailment

As mentioned before, we get emails every day asking for updates on Paula Creamer’s health situation. Unfortunately, we still don’t have any additional information to share on the subject.

In our last update, we mentioned that Paula was scheduled to see some specialists to find the cause of the severe stomach problems she has dealt with since last year. The bottom line… the doctors still don’t know anything.

Paula is currently in Morelia, Mexico participating in the Corona Championship and in an interview on Wednesday, she spoke about her health issues:

It’s really up and down. It’s difficult. You know, I don’t feel like I’m myself. I’m on a lot of medication, but I just have to deal with it right now. Hopefully, we can get to the bottom of what’s going on. It’s very unfortunate, but, you know, I can’t change that right now. The doctors don’t know what it is yet.

As soon as we hear anything else, we will let you know.

Paula to Throw Out First Pitch at Phillies’ Game

Paula Creamer will throw out the first pitch before the Philadelphia Phillies’ game on July 6 game at Citizens Bank Park to help promote U.S. Women’s Open week. The 64th U.S. Women’s Open Championship begins July 9 at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Creamer, the fourth-ranked player in the world, announced the promotion on the Adopt-a-Player blog at the tournament’s official website. She also invited the third- and fourth-grade classes which have adopted her to sit with her at the game.

“I better start practicing, because I do not want to throw a grounder,” Creamer wrote.

Creamer is one of 25 players participating in the Adopt-a-Player program.

Creamer to Play in Corning Classic

According to tournament officials, Paula Creamer has recently signed up to compete in next month’s LPGA Corning Classic at the Corning Country Club in Corning, New York. Also committing to the $1.5 million event May 18 through 24 at Corning Country Club are former champions Cindy Rarick (1987) and Kelli Kuehne.

The field for the 31st LPGA Corning Classic now stands at 80.

Creamer tied for second in the 2007 Classic and finished 15th last year. She’s won eight times on the LPGA Tour in her four-year career and is ranked ninth on the LPGA’s 2009 money list with $255,819.

Paula Creamer Health Update

Over the last week or so we have received a large number of emails asking about Paula Creamer’s health. Unfortunately, we do not have any information that you haven’t already heard. Still, I thought it would be a good idea to post something here just to let everyone know what we have heard.

For those who don’t know… Over the last couple of months Paula has been dealing with a stomach ailment that is causing a loss of appetite, nausea, and shaking. As a result, she has experienced some weight loss and is struggling with fatigue. It has been referred to as a “mystery illness” by some publications. That’s basically all we know at this point.

We have heard that she will be seeing some specialists later this week to determine the cause. I think this was also mentioned during the telecast of the Kraft Nabisco Championship on ESPN.

We certainly hope that it is nothing serious and look forward to seeing Paula compete in the Corona Championship next week in Mexico. As soon as we have any additional information we will let you know.

Kraft Nabisco Championship Final Round Update

Congratulations to Brittany Lincicome!

In order to win her first major championship Lincicome had to battle her nerves and two other golfers, Cristie Kerr and Kristy McPherson. In the end, she was up to the task.

Lincicome carded a three-under-par 69 in the final round of the Kraft Nabisco Championship at Mission Hills Country Club for a 72-hole total of nine-under 279. Kerr, the 2007 United States Women’s Open champion, sank her birdie attempt on 18 to finish with a one-under 71. McPherson, who started the day one stroke ahead of Kerr and two in front of Lincicome, made a par on the last hole for a 72.

Not only did she win but she won with what could be the greatest shot in the history of the Kraft Nabisco Championship. Lincicome’s shot to five feet from the pin – over water, to an island green, trailing by one stroke – from 210 yards with a hybrid was simply spectacular.

Paula Creamer also finished up with a final round of three-under-par 69. Unfortunately her third round 77 ended any chance she had of winning her first major championship. The tough conditions and the fact that she is still struggling with the stomach ailment made this a very difficult week for Paula.

Here is how the leaderboard looked after Sunday’s final round:

Brittany Lincicome -9
Cristie Kerr -8
Kristy McPherson -8
Lindsey Wright -6
Suzann Pettersen -5
Meaghan Francella -5
Christina Kim -3
Pat Hurst -2
Karrie Webb -2
Katherine Hull -2
Jimin Kang -2

The next tournament for the ladies will be the Corona Championship played April 23-26 in Mexico.

Kraft Nabisco Championship Second Round Update

The only winner today was Mother Nature as the players struggled with the windy conditions during the second round of the Kraft Nabisco Championship at Mission Hills Country Club. LPGA Tour official Doug Brecht said the wind built through the afternoon, from a constant 10-20 mph at noon to 20-30 mph from 2 p.m. on. He said it was 31 mph at 5 p.m.

Paula Creamer never really got things rolling today but did manage to stay in contention as other players really struggled with the wind. Her even par 72 was good enough to move her into a tie for seventh place at 2 under. She goes into weekend only 4 shots behind the leaders despite not playing her best golf.

A good round on Saturday could put Paula in perfect position to capture her first major championship.

Here are the leaders after Friday’s second round:

Kristy McPherson -6
Christina Kim -6
Cristie Kerr -5
Brittany Lincicome -4
Lindsey Wright -3
Jimin Kang -3
Paula Creamer -2
Angela Stanford -2
Pat Hurst -2
Helen Alfredsson -2

Check back tomorrow for a recap of Saturday’s action.

Graeme Baxter Paints Paula Creamer Portrait

The Kraft Nabisco Championship commissioned Graeme Baxter to paint a portrait of Paula Creamer, the LPGA player known as the “Pink Panther”, in celebration of the 2009 tournament being played at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California.

“We’ve had such a success with the previous golf landscape paintings of Mission Hills signature holes over the past five years and we’re excited to continue to be a part of Kraft’s LPGA program,” states Graeme. “It’s the one tournament I look forward to the most, year after year because the Kraft team is great to work with and the crowds are fun.”

Graeme Baxter is renowned for his original golf art landscape oil paintings of signature holes from the world’s most prestigious golf clubs, but has in recent years been commissioned to do portrait paintings for PGA and LPGA Champions, the likes of Padraig Harrington and now Paula Creamer. For professional golfers and their sponsors, lithograph prints of the original painting are great for awards, corporate gifts and charitable donations.

The Paula Creamer Kraft portrait was unveiled this week by Graeme Baxter and Dennis Belcrastro at a private party in her honor. After unveiling Paula was speechless but eventually was able to say, “I love it. I just absolutely love it and I can’t stop staring at it.”

The original oil painting will be on display in the Clubhouse at Mission Hills and at the exhibition area adjacent the practice range for the duration of the event. Giclees prints signed by Paula Creamer will also be available for sale at the event in the Graeme Baxter Golf Art Exhibition booth.

You can see Baxter’s beautiful artwork by visiting his website.

Kraft Nabisco Championship First Round Scores

Paula Creamer played very well in the first round of the Kraft Nabisco Championship at Mission Hills Country Club despite continuing to suffer from a mysterious stomach ailment. She managed to navigate the par 72 course with 2 birdies, 16 pars, and most importantly… 0 bogeys.

All things considered, it was a very good start for Paula but it could have easily been much better. Her iron play was a little shaky at times and it cost her a few birdie opportunities. After the round, Creamer felt she had some work to do…

“I played better than 2-under and anytime I had a chance to make birdie with my wedge, you know, I had about a 20-footer. I’ll be hitting some wedges today after this interview.”

Despite missing a few scoring chances Paula still managed to put herself in position to make a run at her first major victory.

Here are the top scores from Thursday’s first round:

Brittany Lincicome – 66
Angela Stanford – 67
Oh Ji-Young – 67
Brittany Lang – 67
Kristy McPherson – 68
Lee Ji-hee – 69
Kim Song-hee – 69
Tseng Yani – 69
Christina Kim – 69
Katherine Hull – 69
Lee Jee-young – 69
Akiko Fukushima – 70
Kim In-kyung – 70
Paula Creamer – 70
Yoo Sun-young – 70
Lindsey Wright – 70
Moira Dunn – 70

We will have another update after the second round.
